Me and My… Painful PCOD journey (Part-1)

Such a long time

I’ve been waitin’, I’ve been waitin’ for a long time

Such a long time

I’ve been waitin’, I’ve been waitin’ for a long time

Such a long time

It all started when my mom, met my dad and they had me, Hi I’m Nayan and my life is kinda crazy!!! I know, I know its an overused tiktok sound, but my life was turned upside down by this mammoth disease, which I didn’t know 50% of the women suffer with. Ok, bare with me for one second, being a science student the urge to tell you more about this disease is uncontrollable. So, PCOD aka Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease is a disease where the ovaries develop cysts. This further hinder the release of the egg, leading to several symptoms like missing of the period.

Yup, I missed my period before I even started them (laughing emojis). Not joking- I shed a few drops in the eighth grade and then a few more in the tenth grade. And when finally in eleventh grade I had an opportunity to last a full five-six days it stopped. Again.

My period was irregular most of the time. It showed up out of nowhere every 3-4 months. It is just like that guy you want to talk to but he doesn’t give you even a speck of attention (smirk emoji). Yup, exactly the one you are thinking about right now (laughing emojis). But towards the end of 11th grade, it just stopped showing up. I waited for months for it to arrive but it didn’t (not me, talking about my period like it’s prince charming or whatever).

So in the beginning of 12th grade, after waiting for almost 8 months, I visited the doctor. And without checking, analyzing or even asking, the doctor put me on Oral Contraceptives (OC). She prescribed me the disguised devil– a medicine called Diane-35.

Before we continue I deeply and heartily DONOT apologize for the blog having all these scientific terms. Spare me, I’m preparing for my PhD in Reproductive Biology (laughing emojis).

Fun facts about Diane-35- you take this medicine for 21 days without EVER missing a day at the same time each day. Then we wait for 5-6 days and it blesses you with your period. That’s not it, it comes along with an amazing package of unlimited nausea, breathlessness, feeling claustrophobic throughout the day, constipation problems. And if that wasn’t the worst feeling, Diane is a medicine that is used to prevent pregnancy (basically a nightmare for a mother of a high school girl).

Ohhh and how can I forget, a face full of beautiful, luscious, ready to pop, painful pimples. Thank God I don’t have a picture, coz you would have skipped a meal after seeing them (single line smile emoji). I continued this OC for around a year and a half. Whenever I stopped taking Diane, my period would stop too. They were basically besties at this point.

Now, a day comes when I have paid stacks on consultation charges. I have more than 478 tablets of Diane in my bloodstream, the doctor decides to shift me to another treatment. A Homeopathic treatment. For anyone who doesn’t know, Homeopathy uses natural plant extracts for the treatment of diseases. It is quite prevalent in India.

I got recommended to Dr. RK (will not say the full name because I haven’t asked for her permission). The first sight of this lady left me in awe. A middle aged woman- pretty, well dressed, extremely well spoken and welcoming. Inner me was thanking God at this point that I got in touch with her. Bonus point of this whole experience was that her mom assists her professionally. I went to these appointments with my mom too. So we instantly clicked.

Dr. R started by analyzing and asking about the previous treatment I had taken, the symptoms I was facing. She also asked about my mental health and basically everything that was bothering me. After two rounds of ultrasounds of my upper and lower pelvis, she concluded that I had PCOD.

The thing with homeopathy is that it takes time. A hella lot of time.

So she started with six bottles 30 mL each containing nasty colorful liquids. I had to take 4 times a day. It was very difficult to keep up with this routine because I had just started my 2nd year in college. So the afternoon dose was almost impossible to take. But I kept at it and slowly after loads of ultrasounds and litres of medicine in, I was cured. Either this PCOD was weak or I was strong!

6 plastic bottles with dark colored liquids, brown liquid, pale green liquid, plastic bag, ziplock bag
There isn’t a word that can describe how dreadful these where (vomit emoji). The only thing good about them was that they made me a little tipsy (smirk emoji) just like alcohol does.

The cysts went away after I repeated this medicine cycle along with 5 more bottles from which I had to take 5 drops from each bottle twice a day for two years. My ovaries now looked normal and I even got a period on my own. My body did it. I did it!

After countless days of stressing over the money I was giving to the doctor and the labs, the visits to the parlor to get my overgrowing facial hair removed (side effects of PCOD), hundreds of creams and ointments to calm my booming acne down, finally it all ended.

Yup, that’s what I thought. But I skipped my period for 2 months again (my body literally went “Surprise M*therF*cker”). I thought to myself this is definitely not the end. I waited, so you will have to wait too. I’ll catch you in Part-2 of PCOD.

Until next time, Adios amigos.
