MindOomph Shorts No. 82: Family politics, a sure thing!

Family politics? Yeah, it’s definitely a thing.

I used to think it was just something you saw in those Korean dramas, where relatives are battling it out to become the next heir or gain control of the family business. It all seemed so dramatic and far-fetched, like something out of a TV show. But then I grew up, and I realized that family politics are actually a lot more common than I thought. It’s not always about inheritance or power struggles – sometimes it’s just about who gets to make the decisions or have their voice heard in family matters.

You start to notice it when you become old enough to be part of those “grown-up conversations.” Suddenly, you’re privy to all the behind-the-scenes drama and power struggles that you never knew existed. And let me tell you, it can be eye-opening. It’s like there’s this whole other world within your family that you never knew about, filled with alliances, rivalries, and hidden agendas. And navigating it all can be tricky, especially when you’re still trying to figure out your own place in the family dynamic.

I’ve seen it play out in so many ways – from subtle power plays during gatherings to full-blown conflicts over major decisions. And it’s not always easy to know how to handle it, especially when emotions are running high and loyalties are divided. But I’ve learned that the key is to stay true to yourself and your values, even when things get messy. It’s about finding your voice and standing up for what you believe in, even if it means going against the grain or risking conflict.

At the end of the day, family is supposed to be a source of love and support, not drama and power struggles. So I try to approach this politics with empathy and understanding, knowing that everyone is just trying to navigate their way through this crazy thing called life – even if they do it in their own unique way.
