MindOomph Shorts No. 148: The future can be scary!

The future version of you requires preparation.

This idea has been on my mind a lot lately. It’s easy to get lost in the daily grind, but thinking about who I want to become helps me stay focused. I imagine the person I want to be in five, ten, or even twenty years. What kind of life do I want to lead? What skills do I need to get there? What habits should I build now to make that future a reality?

Preparing for the future doesn’t mean I have to have everything figured out right now. It’s more about taking small steps every day. For example, if I want to be healthier, I start by eating better and exercising regularly. These small changes add up over time. If I want to advance in my career, I look for opportunities to learn new skills and take on challenges that push me out of my comfort zone.

Sometimes, the idea of preparing for the future can feel overwhelming. There are so many things I could do, and it’s hard to know where to start. But I remind myself that I don’t have to do everything at once. I can start with one thing and build from there. It’s all about progress, not perfection.

I also think about the habits I have now that might not be serving my future self. Maybe I spend too much time on social media or procrastinate on important tasks. Recognizing these habits is the first step to changing them. I ask myself, “Is this helping me become the person I want to be?” If the answer is no, I try to find ways to change that habit.

Another important part of preparing for the future is setting goals. These goals give me something to work towards and keep me motivated. I try to make my goals specific and achievable. Instead of saying, “I want to be successful,” I might say, “I want to complete a certification course in my field within the next six months.” This way, I have a clear target and a timeline to work with.

Sometimes, life throws curveballs, and my plans might not go as expected. That’s okay. Flexibility is key. If I encounter a setback, I try to learn from it and adjust my plans accordingly. The important thing is to keep moving forward, even if it’s just a little bit at a time.

Finally, I remind myself to enjoy the journey. Preparing for the future is important, but it’s also crucial to live in the present. I make sure to take time for hobbies, relaxation, and spending time with loved ones. These moments of joy and connection are what make life meaningful.

Until next time, Adios amigo!
