Our generation doesn’t have a “third place.”.
Today I saw a video that said that our parents or generations before us had 3 places to go to: work, home, and a third place, which they all attended to, to decompress and relax. It got me thinking that it’s funny how something as simple as a “third place” can make such a big difference in our lives. When I think about it, I realize how much our generation has missed out on.
I mean, think about it. Our parents and those before them had it figured out. They had their workplace for productivity, their home for family and relaxation, and that third place—a café, a park, a community center—where they could just be themselves. They could catch up with friends, engage in hobbies, or simply sit and watch the world go by. It was like a sanctuary amidst the chaos of everyday life.
But for us, it’s different. Our third place has become social media—the digital realm where we spend countless hours scrolling, comparing ourselves to others, and seeking validation through likes and comments. And let’s be real, that’s not exactly the healthiest or most fulfilling way to spend our time.
The good news is, we don’t have to settle for social media as our third place. We have the power to redefine what that space looks like for us. We can choose to prioritize activities that nourish our minds, bodies, and souls.
Maybe it’s carving out time for daily meditation, allowing ourselves to disconnect from the noise and find inner peace. Or perhaps it’s hitting the gym or going for a run, letting our bodies move and releasing all that pent-up energy and stress.
So now that you have a choice, what is going to be your third place? Just like the rest of our generation, will you continue to let social media be your default third place, or will you take control and cultivate a space that truly nourishes your mind, body, and soul? Choose wisely.
Until next time, Adios amigo!
As much as I hate being addicted to social media, there is one app that I love spending time on because it helps me visualize my future self. This app is Pinterest and I can vouch for this big time. You can see and read about what I usually look at on Pinterest HERE!
